- Story Text: The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) sent bulldozers on the main street of the Jordanian capital Amman to clear the snow on Friday (February 20).
Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday (February 19) the country would be affected by a polar front and a depression from Thursday. It forecast thunderstorms and rain on Friday with snowfall in areas 600 metres above sea level and higher.
The Public Security Department (PSD) said that most of the inner roads in the capital were blocked with snow while the main roads were opened.
The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) spokesperson during the snowstorm, Baker Abbadi, urged residents to be cautious and to stay inside unless they really need to.
"Our preparations are ongoing and our equipment and facilities have been working to open the roads since last night. Most of the main roads are being opened, thanks to God, but with great caution. If there is a frost roads are becoming slippery and because there is a great danger for people to go out on these roads we suggest that they do not go out unless there is a great need," Abbadi said.
The harsh weather had been expected and many Jordanians stocked food ahead of the weekend. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
