Returning to Tokyo in their starring roles as the four great friends in "Sex and the City 2", are Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.
The Sex and the City gals glammed up Tokyo on Monday (May 31), just a day before the film's Japan premiere.
Some lucky Japanese fans, who won advance tickets to see the film's news conference, filled up the audience as the cast and director Michael Patrick King wowed them once again by saying "Konichiwa!" (Hello in Japanese).
"Sex and the City 2" is the follow-up to the 2008 blockbuster, which pulled in more than 415 million U.S. dollars worldwide and was inspired by the popular series based on the writings of Candace Bushnell.
The sequel, distributed by Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros, sees a return to celebrating the friendship of the four main characters -- Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha -- who reflect on marriage and motherhood, leaving behind their families for an unlikely extravagant holiday in Abu Dhabi.
Cattrall, who plays single businesswoman Samantha Jones, says the film transcends cultures and all types of women.
"I think one of the things that always surprises us is that no matter where we go - women, different cultures, different traditions - we translate so well," said Cattrall.
"It's quite extraordinary because we think of ourselves as such New York gals. We think of New York as the fifth woman. But your welcoming means so much to us," she added.
Supporting characters from the TV series, such as Carrie's former boyfriend Aidan, appear in the sequel, and superstars including Liza Minnelli and Miley Cyrus make cameo appearances.
Davis, who plays conservative Charlotte York-Goldenblatt, says she was thrilled to meet so many Charlotte fans in Tokyo.
"One of the things that I, that I don't' think I ever realised before was the kind of understanding from the Japanese women of Charlotte and her conservative viewpoint and sometimes in other countries people are frustrated by that, but I realised here that you all understand so I want to say 'arigato' (thank you in Japanese)," said Davis.
During the news conference, the cast and director shared personal stories from the film and joked around just like the girls in the film.
Nixon, who plays married lawyer Miranda Hobbes, says her favourite scene was singing karaoke in Abu Dhabi.
"It was very interesting to hear each woman's voice. I feel like, you know, Sarah Jessica's voice I've known for a long time because she's a Broadway singer, so I could hear Sarah Jessica as her. But and Kristin Davis is from the south of America so when she sang, she really, you could hear that, but you don't hear in her everyday...she was so soulful, the way someone from the south would be," said Nixon.
"Then when Kim would sing, she sounded to me like 'Cher'," she added.
Director King says the latest film is like "007 for women", but with Manolos instead of fast cars. He also insisted the countless glamorous outfits - selected by costume designer Patricia Field - are sure to tantalize women everywhere who love fashion.
Parker, who plays newlywed columnist Carrie Bradshaw, said there is one particular outfit from the film that stands out and is her all-time favourite.
"I do like the outfit when Miranda and I first go to the souk and she's in all white with her white hat and I'm wearing the 'j'adore' Dior old vintage T-shirt and the big Zac Posen underpinnings and I'm wearing some Manolos that were made specifically for the movie and I like that outfit because it sort of archetype Carrie for me," said Parker.
Cast members and trend experts said the influence of the franchise on pop culture has been nothing short of incredible since the groundbreaking TV series first aired in 1998.
The film, which opened in theatres across the U.S. last week, will be released on June 4 in Japan. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
