  • Story Text: Italians soaked up the sun on beaches outside Rome on Sunday (July 9, 2006), with dreams of an Italian victory over France in the World Cup final.
    On the beach at Fregene, 30 kilometres from Rome and popular with Romans, many people were sporting Italian soccer shirts and shorts.
    "I'm on the beach with this t-shirt as a lucky charm for the match," said one man who has worn the same shirt on the day of every match in the tournament.
    "We don't want to tempt providence," he added.
    Everyone expressed high hopes for an Italian victory.
    "Italy will win for sure. It's been too long since Italy won," said a young man. "The French people are a bit arrogant so we want to give them a moral slap."
    "Tonight will be a great game. I think Italy will make it," said a lifeguard.
    Up to a hundred thousand people are expected to gather in Rome's Circo Massimo to party and watch the game on three giant screens.
