- Story Text: Hundreds of people have thronged London's Leicester Square for the European premiere of Sylvester Stallone's science-fiction epic "Judge Dredd." Stars Diane Lane, Roy Schneider and British-born director Danny Cannon attended the premiere. Stallone did not appear, after earlier failing to attend the movie's Hollywood debut.
The movie, said to have cost 70 million U.S. dollars, is based on the British 2000AD comic book series. The strip was a favourite of director Danny Cannon, who couldn't wait to bring it to the big screen.
The story is set in an anarchic future. The only last bastions of law and order are roving Judges, who also act as instant jury and executioner.
Judge Dredd (Stallone) is one of the fairest. But his renegade DNA-cloned brother Rico (Armand Assante) is out to gain control of Mega City.
He frames Dredd for murder, has him sent to prison, and wipes out the other judges.
Needless to say, Stallone fights back, aided by former "Saturday Night Live" comic Schneider as his inept criminal sidekick, Fergie.
Schneider performed many of his own stunts, joking that he is still has the scars to prove it.
To clear his name, Dredd also enlists the help of Judge Hershey, played by Lane.
She said she enjoyed working with Stallone, but it was sometimes hard to work out where Judge Dredd's character ended and Stallone began.
The movie, which has taken more than 26 million U.S. dollars at the U.S. box office so far, will open across Europe soon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
