- Story Text: The innovative entertainment company Cirque du Soleil opens at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday (January 5) with their spectacular show, Saltimbanco.
Founded in Montreal in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is renowned for shows which mix theatre, dance, acrobatics and music with stunning costumes and a dramatic light show. The troupe use no animals, but rely instead on a kaleidoscope of colour, sound and artistry to spellbind spectators. Music for the show is live, ranging from hard rock to opera to jazz.
Cirque performers come from all backgrounds: many have trained at circus schools, some are prodigies of gymnastics, trampoline, acrobatics, tumbling and diving while others come from a background in theatre, mime, dance and music.
Amongst the 110 members on the Saltimbanco tour, there are 45 artists from eight different countries.
The youngest member of the group is Russian acrobat Anton Tchelnokov, 10, who performs with his parents Nikolai and Yalina.
Anton made his debut on stage when he was just three years old.
The troupe was founded by former fire-eater Guy Laliberte in 1984with a handful of street performers. He says that they used traditional acrobatic skills of the circus but added their own artistic sense to make the show different. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
