  • Story Text: A kiss is not always just a kiss - sometimes it is a world record.That is the story from New York City Thursday (March 26), where a United States couple won a contest for the world's longest kiss -- locking lips for 29 hours.

    Roberta and Mark Griswold of Detroit, Michigan outlasted eight other couples in the kissing contest, with their closest competition dropping out 22 minutes earlier.

    Asked afterward how they prepared for the event, Roberta Griswold said, "We've been practicing for 16 years." Under the rules, the couples' lips had to touch constantly, they had to remain standing and no breaks were allowed.

    Runners-up Chike Lamar Carter and Menthia Clark of New Orleans finally gave in to nature's call to the bathroom.

    Clark said they stopped because her boyfriend had to use the bathroom."If it wasn't for that, we could have gone on," she said.

    The top prize in the kissathon, sponsored by Breath Savers breath mints, was a week-long trip to Paris.

    Surprised that the final two couples lasted so long, the contest sponsors opted to give the trip to both.The Griswolds said they hoped to conceive their first child in Paris.

    Outside the Harley Davidson Cafe in midtown Manhattan, where the contest was held, curious onlookers gathered to watch and to comment.

    The winners will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records, which does not have an entry for the longest kiss.
