- Story Text: INTRO: A young Japanese man is the world's new hot dog eating champion. He won the title on Wednesday by defeating the United States record holder.
Hirofumi Nakajima, 22, consumed twenty three and a quarter hot dogs in twelve minutes on Wednesday (December 4), taking the world hot dog eating title off his competitor, Edward Krachie, 33, from the United States, who only ate 21 of them.
The contest was sponsored by a Japanese television station and a well-known hot-dog seller, Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs.
Nakajima said he was spurred on to win by the spectators' support for his opponent.
Krachie gave up his title gracefully, though he suspected that Nakajima had not been entirely truthful when he said he had never eaten a hot dog in his life before the contest.
Nakajima took first prize in a Japanese contest in which he consumed 15 bowls of noodle soup, 100 pieces of sushi, five plates of wheat noodles, five plates of beef and rice and five plates of curry and rice.
