- Story Text: A United Nations (U.N.) emergency relief convoy crossed from Croatia into Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday (August 24) bound for the Croat-besieged town of Mostar, where 55,000 people are desperately short of food and medicine.
But one report said the convoy had been held up inside Bosnia.
The Bosnian Croat military earlier on Tuesday temporarily lifted an 80-day-old blockade of Moslem-populated east Mostar, clearing the way for the food convoy, as Croat-Moslem fighting resurged in the divided southwestern city.
A U.N. official said the 19-truck convoy carrying 200 tonnes of aid crossed the border and would link up with the U.N. Spanish battalion escort in Medjugorje before going on to Mostar.
UNPROFOR (U.N. Protection Force) civil affairs director Cedric Thornberry plans to lead the emergency aid convoy into Mostar.
The convoy had enough food for a week, said U.N. High Commission for Refugees spokesman Ken Harvey. U.N. officials said some inhabitants could die of starvation within days unless food shipments arrived.
In Mostar itself, doctors reported that at least two civilians were killed and five soldiers wounded on Tuesday after mortar bombs hit the Moslem hospital.
