- Story Text: INTRO: More than 1,500 British employees of jeans makers Levi Strauss were today in party mood as they savoured the prospect of a one-off bonus of a year's salary averaging 14,000 pounds.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Details of the millennium bonus were being announced today at workplace meetings at the US-owned manufacturer's four British plants - three in Scotland, at Bellshill, Dundee and Whitburn, and its headquarters and distribution centre in Northampton.
At Whitburn, the company's biggest plant outside North America, marquees were set up and a jazz band and mass barbecue was being arranged for the midday meetings at which the 631 workers were being told details of the scheme.
Under the scheme, Levi Strauss will reward more than 37,000 workers worldwide with a bonus payment of about a year's salary "in return for their contributions to the company's financial success".
The cash payment will be made in six years' time, provided Levi Strauss reaches its objective of 7.6 billion US dollars (around #5 billion) cashflow by the end of the 2001 financial year.
The amount paid will depend on how much of the target is achieved and the number of eligible workers. Levi Strauss is the largest clothing manufacturer in the world and the company's 501 jeans are one of the best known brand names.
The company was founded 145 years ago in San Francisco by the Bavarian immigrant Levi Strauss who spotted a gap in the market for tough-wearing work trousers.
