- Story Text: - INTRO: Media mogul Ted Turner on Thursday (Sept 18)announced he would donate one billion dollars over the next ten years to United Nations humanitarian programmes.
The founder of CNN, who is vice chair of Time Warner, has long been a supporter of the U.N.
Turner made the announcement at a dinner in New York of the U.S. United Nations association, where he was the recipient of a "global leadership award." Because the U.N. cannot accept contributions from individuals, Turner said, he would establish a foundation to finance costs of "humanitarian" programmes.
The amount of his pledge nearly equals the amount of the U.S.
arrears to the world body.
Earlier in the day, Turner joked with Secretary General Kofi Annan during a brief photo-call. He said "I'm gonna hold my breath until the U.S. pays up." CNN said Turner will make annual donations to a new foundation in installments of 100 million dollars in stock for ten years.
Speaking on CNN, Turner said the decision to make the donation was made two days ago. Turner is worth some 3.2 billion dollars.
