- Story Text: United States (U.S.) Vice President Al Gore made a brief stop-over call in Kiev on Tuesday (August 2) and urged Ukraine's politicians to press ahead with economic reforms.
The stop-over was an opportunity for Gore to meet newly elected Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, who took power on July 10.
Speaking on arrival at Kiev airport, Gore said the U.S. could see little alternative for the Ukraine but to push ahead with comprehensive economic changes.
He also said he would review Ukraine's progress in implementing the three-way nuclear disarmament accord signed by the United States, Ukraine and Russia in January.
Gore referred to the agreement as "a fundamental element of our bilateral relationship and a cornerstone of regional stability".
Kuchma welcomed Gore at the Marinski Palace for afternoon talks.
The vice-president also held discussions with parliamentary deputies and Speaker Olexander Moroz.
Gore's visit indicates Kuchma is eager to keep open lines to the West, despite a record of past comments suggesting he is sceptical about large-scale Western assistance.
The two men met in April during a private visit to Washington by Kuchma, then a likely presidential candidate.
Gore is the first high-level official from abroad to have visited Ukraine since Kuchma was elected. Gore arrived from neighbouring Poland after attending the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
