- Story Text: Manchester United ended a week pre-season training
camp in Algarve, Portugal, on Saturday (July 3) ignoring
completely the row about the clubs recente take over by U.S. tycoon
Malcolm Glazer.
Manager Alex Fergusons squad and their familes returned
to pre-season training a week earlier than usual for a stay
in the scenic Vale de Lobo resort in the south of sunny
Portugal.
During the five-day stay, Manchester United players,
including newcomer goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar had an
entertaining training in the local ground in the mourning.
In the afternoon, the players relaxed at the beach,
played tennis at the local club or enjoyed a round of golf.
Manchester will leave at the end of the month for a
four-game tour of Honk Kong and Tokyo.
A pledge by Manchester Uniteds new owners to give
manager Alex Ferguson the best team should give a welcome lift to a
club facing a tricky transition period.
Joel Glazers commitment to provide transfer funds after
his familys controversial takeover was designed to put aside
fears of cuts in spending on players.
We are going to provide the manager with the resources
necessary to field the best team, Glazer said, dismissing
reports of a yearly 25 million-pound transfer cap as
absolutely not true.
Ferguson needs that money if United are to complete
their transition from the all-conquering side of the past decade
to a new, younger team capable of competing with champions
Chelsea and Arsenal.
Much has already been done to at least keep United near
the top of the pile.
