- Story Text: Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) military chief Zuhair Mohsen died today (26 July) when life support systems were switched off. Mr Mohsen was shot in the head by gunmen yesterday on his way home from the Palm Beach casino in Cannes. The pro-Syrian Saiqa commando group which was led by Mr Mohsen has vowed revenge on his attackers and blames the assassination attempt on the "Camp David Alliance", by which they mean Egypt, Israel and the United States.
SYNOPSIS: Zuhair Mohsen was a controversial figure in the Palestinian movement. Although a leading member of the PLO, he also had another role. Mr Mohsen was also chief of the pro-Syrian Saiqa guerrilla group whose reputation suffered in Palestinian eyes, at least, during the Lebanese civil war in summer 1976. Syria sided with the Christians against its former Palestinian allies. One of its effects was the disintegration of the Saiqa organisation. But most Palestinians, including PLO leader Yasser Arafat, claim Israeli intelligence was behind the shooting. Doctor Mohammed Abu-Koash, assistant PLO representative in London commented to John Derby:
