Summary:Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1990 on October 15. The Norwegian-based Nobel Committee announced the award at their headquarters in Oslo in recognition of Gorbachev's initiatives to promote peace, end the Cold War and shatter a rigid political system in Eastern Europe. Gorbachev told reporters in Moscow the prize coincided with a crucial stage of perestroika.
