- Story Text: The United Nations Assistant Secretary General for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Helvi Sipila, told women delegates from 27 African countries on Monday (June 3), women had been a largely forgotten factor in development efforts.
Development needed the fullest possible utilization of all material and human resources.
Mrs. Sipila was addressing a three-day United Nations Regional Seminar on "The Integration of Women in Development" with special reference to population.
She emphasised that women could retard progress if they continued to be ignored and left out of the development process.
If women were given a better education, and more independent economic status it wouldalso give them an approved opportunity to have children by choice rather than by chance.
The Regional Seminars on Women and Development have been created in co-operation between the United Nations Centre For Social Development and the United Nations Regional Economic Commissions.
Among the nations represented at the Addie Ababa seminar were Congo Republic, Burundi, Botswana, Dahomey, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Senegal and Mali.
