- Story Text: International artistes join hands to sing for Asian
tsunami aid.
An stellar cast of international artistes from the
United States to Hong Kong sang to raise funds at a tsunami
aid charity concert in Malaysia on Friday night (Mar 18).
Singers Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean joined hands with
pop groups such as Boyz II Men, Backstreet Boys and Black
Eyed Peas together with Asian artistes Jackie Chan, Sheila
Majid and Ruth Sahanaya in the four-hour Force of Nature
Tsunami Aid concert in capital Kuala Lumpur.
The concert, organised by Malaysian-based Force of
Nature Foundation, raised more than its 10 million ringgit
(US$1 = 3.80 ringgit) target as the crowd filled up the
13,000 capacity stadium. The organisers had timed the
concert to coincide with the Petronas F1 Malaysian Grand
Prix over the weekend.
The Asian tsunami last December 26 swept through
countries around the Indian Ocean, killing some 260,000
people and leaving about five million homeless.
Hundreds of fans crowded the entrance to the indoor
stadium a few hours before the concert to get a glimpse of
stars' arrivals.
Among those there were American Idol judge and singer
Paula Abdul, American Idol contestant Clay Aiken and actors
Jackie Chan and actress Bai Ling. Organisers said the huge
gathering of artistes was unprecedented in Malaysia.
Singer Wyclef Jean, who used to be with The Fugees,
summed up their participation.
"I mean really, you know, we came to lend our support,
the performances and for all the tsunami victims, our
prayers are with you," Jean told reporters.
Another popular singer, Joey Fatone from N'Sync, said
the entertainers were all out to help tsunami victims.
"We are a force of nature and if a bunch, obviously all
of us can get together especially entertainers, obviously
we have a pretty much big influence so actors and
entertainers are coming out here to help the tsunami
victims and everything else and help them build back their
community and so we are very supportive of all that and try
to help out as much as we can," Fatone said.
Singer Lauryn Hill started the concert and brought the
crowd to their feet as she sang five songs. Several
Malaysian acts followed with Malaysian jazz singer Sheila
Majid drawing the most cheers.
Boyz II Men's Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman and Wanya
Morris and the Black Eyed Peas brought the roof down with
their performances, cajoling the crowd to dance the night
away.
