- Story Text: Special United Nations envoy Vittorio Winspeare Guiccardi talked with Indonesian President Suharto and Foreign Minister Adam Malik on Friday (16 January) about the situation in the troubled former Portuguese colony of East Timor.
Signor Guiccardi, who is due to fly to East Timor on Monday (19 January), described his meeting with president Suharto as "satisfactory". The United Nations Security Council sent Signor Guiccardi for a first hand look at East Timor. Indonesia owns the other half of the island.
There has been fighting in East Timor since last year. The left-wing Fretilin Independence Movement appeared to be gaining the upper hand in a civil war when they were routed by a counter attack by Djakarta-backed forces seeking a merger with Indonesia and Indonesian troops. The Indonesian troops are still officially termed "volunteers" by the Indonesian government.
Asked if he would try to meet the Fretilin leaders who have reportedly been drive into the hills by the pro-Indonesian forces, Signor Guiccardi said, "I would like to meet as many people as possible. This is not a propaganda mission and I shall report to the Security Council Secretariat".
Australian Foreign Minister Andrew Peacock is expected in Djakarta on Monday (19 January). He is apparently seeking an explanation of a reported statement by mr. Malik calling for the annexation of East Timor by Indonesia. Mr. Malik has denied making such a statement.
