Yuri Zakharevich of the Soviet Union broke three world records in the heavyweight (110 kgs) division at the European weightlifting championships in Cardiff on April 30. He set one of the records in competition, lifting a total of 425 kgs (snatch 2.2.5/jerk 250). Looking for new records, he went on to set a new mark in the snatch with 203.5 kgs, beating his previous record of 203 kgs set in September lat year at Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. The third record came in the jerk with a lift of 250.0 kgs which was enough to regain the record from Bulgarian Stefan Botev who achieved 250 kgs in Budapest last month.
In the super-heavyweight division, another Soviet lifter, Leonid Taranenko, took the overall honours with a total of 462.5 kgs (snatch 207.5 kgs/jerk 255). However, the best snatch of the day was achieved by his compatriot, Andrei Levandovski, who lifted 210 kgs. In the jerk section, the best performance of the day came from Manfred Nerlinger of the Federal Republic of Germany who lifted 257.5 kgs.
