- Story Text: Hamas reports that an Israeli air strike critically wounds two Palestinians riding a motorcycle in southern Gaza.
An Israeli air strike targeted a motorcycle in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday (January 27), critically wounding two people, Hamas and Palestinian medical officials said.
Crowds gathered around the charred vehicle in the aftermath of the attack as an ambulance made its way to hospital with injured bystanders.
Earlier in the day, an Israeli soldier was killed by a bomb on the border with the Gaza Strip.
The strike came just hours after an Israeli soldier was killed by a bomb on the border with the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said a bomb was detonated against its forces on the Israeli side of the border fence near the Kissufim crossing, killing one soldier and wounding another three.
Israeli fire shortly afterwards in the same area killed a Palestinian who medics said was a 27-year-old farmer.
The early morning skirmishing was the bloodiest since the 22-day Israeli offensive ended in ceasefire declarations and left people in Gaza fearing further Israeli attacks.
Ten days after Israel halted a devastating, three-week air and ground offensive that killed 1,300 people in the coastal enclave, neither the ruling Hamas movement nor any other group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Israeli patrol.
But on the day that Barack Obama's envoy arrived in the Middle East bearing a message from the new U.S. president that the "moment is ripe" for peace talks, Israeli leaders, facing an election in two weeks time, promised voters they would hit back.
Residents near Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip close to where the soldier was killed, said that towards evening tanks and armoured bulldozers were manoeuvring around orchards and wells, causing damage in a familiar punitive tactic. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
