Hunger-strikers staging a sleep-in the Homantin district of Hong Kong have decided to step up their protests against plans to resettle them in remote areas of their island by January 20. The 200 protesters -- fire victims from the Kowloon Bay Transit Centre -- set up makeshift tents outside the Housing Department Headquarters on January 9, after the authority had turned down their request for homes in Shatin and Tsun Wan. The strikers have refused an offer of temporary accommodation in Taipo, which they say is too far away from schools and their places of work. About 18 organisation have pledged support for the strikers, who are sustaining themselves on a diet of glucose and fluids. In an open letter to the media, 20 Roman Catholic priests have urged the government to work out ou an acceptable compromise with the squatters. The housing authorities have so far refused to negotiate.
