- Story Text: Doctors have gone on strike in Austria. The strike began on Wednesday (18 October) and will last until Sunday (22 October). An emergency rota service will be maintained for really serious illnesses, and patients can also obtain treatment at hospitals, where doctors will remain on duty. But other practices will stay shut as the doctors drive home their demands for more money for services performed under the health service. To accentuate their point they are also refusing service to private patients during the protest period.
It is the biggest dispute involving doctors in Austria since 1955. More than 6,000 doctors attended a protest meeting in Vienna. They crowded into the streets outside the Hofburg building, which was quickly filled, and later all the protesting doctors marched through the streets - causing traffic diversions - to hand over a protest note to the Austrian Chancellor, Herr Kreisky.
