- Story Text: A strike by employees of India's state telecom company entered a fourth day on Thursday (June 22) causing continued widespread disruption to communication services throughout the country.
The strike was called by labour unions in protest at the entry of foreign multinationals into the Indian telecommunicationssector and to demand improved working conditions.
Airline and railway reservations, newspaper and news agency operations were disrupted in the major cities and virtually paralysed in smaller towns and rural areas.
Banking services and trade and business were also affected.
Telephone lines operating on electronic exchanges continue to function normally.
In the capital New Delhi telecom employees gathered around the main exchanges shouting slogans.
Negotiations between labour unions and government representatives broke down on Wednesday (June 21).
The union representatives rejected a compromise draft agreement drawn up by officials from of the Communications Ministry.
Unions leaders, conscious of the strong views of local union officials and members, are insisting on government curbs to foreign company involvement in the sector.
