- Story Text: The Kenyan government has banned all strike action following a nationwide pattern of strikes, most recently at Nairobi's international Embakasi airport, on Wednesday (August 14).
Senior management and administrative staff had to unload luggage from incoming flights when ground staff walked out in protest at the dismissal of union officials.
Airport services were brought to a virtual half as two thousand five hundred employees of East Africa Airways walked out on wednesday morning only hours after resuming work. an earlier six-hour stoppage was staged when the management of the corporation tried to dismiss four shop stewards and a branch secretary of Kenya's Transport and Allied Workers' Union.
The ban comes at a time of widespread strike action in kenya; railway workers and dockers have staged walk-outs, and students at Nairobi University are currently boycotting their lectures.
SYNOPSIS: Two and a half thousand East African Airways staff have come out on strike in Nairobi, Kenya's international Embakasi airport.
The strikers, porter, mail, cargo and engineering workers came out for the second time in two days after the management's attempt's to sack four shop stewards and a branch secretary of Kenya's Transport and Allied Worker's Union. The stoppage is the last in a series of nationwide strikes involving dockers, railway workers and students.
Aircraft were standing idle at the airport on Wednesday (16 August) but pilots and crews were still manning some incoming flights.
Senior management and administrative staff hurried to meet the planes and took over the work of servicing and unloading baggage themselves.
One passenger, unaware of the strike, asked her impressions of the porters said she though hey were "very lazy".
But the administrators may soon return to their desks. Although talks ended in deadlock, on Friday, the government ordered a ban on all strikes, threatening 'severe disciplinary action".
