Title:Iraq-Iran: Refugees Fleeing From Iraqi Troops Flood Into Iranian And Turkish Frontier Camps
Date:8th April 1991
Summary:In their efforts to flee Iraqi soldiers, nearly two million northern Iraqi Kurds and southern Iraqi Shi'ites overwhelmed Iranian and Turkish frontier camps on April 8. Thousands of refugees, many carrying sick and elderly relatives, others cradling infants, trudged in long, snaking columns over muddy border tracks to cross the Iranian border. After an influx of nearly 700,000 refugees Iran sealed its borders saying it was unable to cope, however within a day it re-opened the border to refugees seeking sanctuary from the Iraqi army. Meanwhile the Iraqi Prime Minister, Sa'dun Hammadi, said that the Kurdish rebellion was organised by terrorist elements from outside the country.
