- Story Text: A stove powered by used cooking oil drew the attention of passers-by at a Jakarta market on Thursday (March 8).
The inventor, Hendra Hadiwijaya, said that by re-using oil the stove provides an economical and environmentally-friendly alternative to the traditional fuel, kerosene.
"It is difficult to find kerosene these days. If you can find it the price has gone up, but you can find cooking oil everywhere at a cheaper price," he said.
He added that 1 litre of used oil can be used for four hours using his stove, compared to the same amount of kerosene for a normal stove, which can only last for two hours.
Many housewives browsing the market said they bought the stove, priced at 275,000 rupiah ($75 USD), to save money in the long term.
"I have lots of used oil at home, now I can use it and it save my money," said a customer, Martanah, after buying a stove.
Food stall sellers also said they were open to trying this new invention.
"If the fuel of the stove is easy to find and cheap, I don't mind to changing my stove," said Adam, a food seller.
The government is due to decide between two options in raising the price of subsidised fuel, currently the cheapest in Asia.
The first option would increase gasoline and diesel prices by 33 percent, or 1,500 rupiah ($0.17 USD) per litre.
The second option would peg subsidies at a maximum 2,000 rupiah ($0.22 USD) per litre.
The current state budget includes 123.6 trillion rupiah ($13.6 billion USD) allocated for fuel subsidies, including premium gasoline, diesel, kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
