Summary:Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed on May 21 by a bomb that exploded minutes after he arrived at a rally in Tamil Nadu state. At least 15 other people were killed in the attack in the remote town of Sriperumpudur, 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Madras. Indian President Ramaswamy Venkataraman made a nationally televised address on that night appealing for calm. Gandhi's body was flown to New Delhi accompanied by his widow Sonia and their 20-year-old daughter. Hundreds of people filed past the coffin to pay their last respects. At least six people died and scores were injured in protests across India as news of his death spread.
