- Story Text: Only two weeks after the death, by natural causes, of President Juan Peron, Argentina is on the brink of widespread internal troubles. Since the leader's death, former Interior Minister Arturo Mor Roig has been assassinated and side to the Social Welfare Minister has been gunned down...though he survived; powerful Labour leader Adelino Romero has died from a heart attack and Labour Minister Ricardo Otero has suffered a heart attack from which he is still recovering.
Political turmoil isn't new to Argentina, but the recent events pose the biggest threat to stability in the country for many years. President Maria Estela Peron, who took over from her husband, is given little chance of surviving the faction fighting which is coming to a head.
The body of Mr. Mor Roig lay in state in the capital on Tuesday (July 16). The former Interior Minister was riddled by shotgun and pistol fire as he lunched in his favourite restaurant on Monday.
SYNOPSIS: Thousands of mourners gathered outside the Congress building in Buenos Aires on Tuesday to pay their last respects to former Interior Minister Arturo Mor Roig. He was shot down while dining at his favourite restaurant on Monday.
Senor Mor Roig's death is the latest in an incredible sequence of events which followed the death of president Juan Peron, two weeks ago...events which seem to be leading Argentina into its most critical period for many years. Three days before Senor Mor Roig was assassinated, an aide to the Social Welfare Minister was shot three times, and survived...Labour leader Adelino Romero died from a heart attack and Labour Minister Ricardo Otero suffered a heart attack.
The deaths among high officials poses a problem for the new leader, President Maria Estela Peron, which seems without answer. With Juan peron gone and some of his strongest supporters either dead or incapacitated, the way seems open to a return to internal fighting for power. Senor Paul Lastiri, a former President, is probably one of msot influential leaders reportedly backing President maria Peron. But it seems she may need more support than that.
