- Story Text: During the fourth day of his five-day State Visit to Pakistan. President Nicolae Ceausescu of Rumania inspected the National Oil Refinery at Korangi, ten miles southeast of Karachi.
Earlier on the same day (Thursday 11 January) the President had visited the Quaid-i-Azam, the tomb of Pakistan's founder, Mohammed Ali Jinnah. Before inspecting the Refinary, he also paid a visit to another of Pakistan's development projects, Karachi's nuclear power plant.
The National Refinery is wholly owned by the government of Pakistan, but Rumania will play a large part in its planned expansion. Under an agreement signed on Wednesday (10 January), Rumania is to lend the Refinery seven million pounds sterling. This will enable the plant to increase its capacity from 500,000 tons of crude oil a year to two million tons. The original cost of building the refinery in its present state was eight million pounds sterling.
SYNOPSIS: The National Oil Refinery at Karachi is one of Pakistan's most important projects.
On Thursday the functional lines of the plant were softened by b??? heralding the arrival of President Nicolae Ceausescu of Rumania. The President toured the plant during the fourth day of his state visit to Pakistan -- the first such visit by the Rumanian Premier.
The refinery is wholly owned by the government of Pakistan, but now Rumania has made a large contribution to its future expansion. On Wednesday the two countries signed an agreement whereby Rumania is to lend seven million pounds to the refinery. After brief explanations about the methods used in the refinery, President Ceausescu returned to his car to tour the two-hundred acre complex.
