- Story Text: Fourteen-year-old Holly Hull named winner of the Disney Channel's "My Camp Rock" reality programme.
Disney star and best friend of Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, crowned a new winner of "My Camp Rock" in London on Friday (April 24).
Fourteen-year-old Holly Hull of Camberley, Surrey received the most votes from viewers of the Disney Channel programme.
Lovato starred in the hugely successful "Camp Rock" film in which she starred alongside the Jonas Brothers. In it, she plays an ordinary girl with an extraordinary voice who's sent to a camp for performers and wows the crowd as well as teenage heartthrob Joe Jonas.
Hull was one of four finalists. The other three included: Jessica Hammond, 15, from Belfast; Reece Cook, 11, from Lowestoft, Suffolk, and the only pair in the competition Abby Timms, 15, and Lucy Jennings, 15, best friends from Birmingham.
The journey started with a call for budding singers and dancers aged 11-16 to submit a tape of them singing a song from "Camp Rock"
Thousands entered but only a few were invited to Camp Rock, where they received vocal coaching from Zoe Tyler and choreography from Gary Lloyd.
R&B singer Craig David was amongst the judging panel during one of the weeks.
Hull will now record a single written especially for her by Disney music producers as well as star in her own music video.
Lovato said Hull deserved to win the coveted prize.
"She was very very outgoing and she seemed very real. It was refreshing to meet somebody so humble and yet she just won this. She's a very very sweet girl and she deserved it," Lovato told Reuters Television.
But she had some words of advice for the would-be performer.
"Enjoy everything and ignore the negativity. Sometimes you spend time worrying about the little things people say, reviews or whatever. Then you realise you're getting to live your dream and all the positive things that are going on in your life weigh over so much more of the negativity so just enjoy every step of the way," she said.
Hull, enjoying her new-found fame, said she was stunned when her name was called out as the winner.
"It's incredible. I can't remember the last 10 minutes that just happened to me right now. It's just amazing, it's so amazing," she said.
She first discovered she could sing when she was seven and currently attends a local theatre school. Her biggest highlight before winning the competition was performing for Queen Elizabeth II for her 80th birthday celebration.
Now she must go back to school on Monday (April 27) but joked she could take on a similar double life as another Disney star: "I can be like Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus and have two lives. Nobody will know."
Lovato performed her new single "La La Land" about staying true to yourself while living in what she calls the "Hollywood machine" of Los Angeles. The 15-year-old co-wrote the single alongside the Jonas Brothers. She recently graduated from high school but has no plans of attending university just yet. But she said she would like to attend film school and would "love" to try her hand at directing.
The actress is also starring in another Disney production, the television show "Sonny With A Chance". The show follows the tribulations of a girl from small town U.S.A. who's cast to star in a new show "So Random!". Sonny and her mother move to California to shoot the sketch comedy.
Lovato said she would welcome the opportunity to direct an episode of "Sonny" but there's been no confirmation yet from producers if this will actually happen. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
