Title:USSR: Military Vehicles Leave Moscow As Coup Begins To Collapse
Date:21st August 1991
Summary:Long columns of Soviet tanks and other military vehicles left Moscow during the afternoon of August 21 in a withdrawal which suggested that the hardline takeover was on the verge of collapse. Official Zil automobiles were also seen leaving the Soviet capital shortly after President Boris Yeltsin announced that all members of the Emergency Committee were trying to leave Moscow. News of a military withdrawal from Moscow followed a night of clashes between Soviet tanks and demonstrators defending the Russian parliament. At least three demonstrators were crushed to death or shot when a column of light tanks tried to break through a barricade of buses near the parliament building.
