Official Zil automobiles were also seen leaving the Soviet capital shortly after President Boris Yeltsin announced that all members of the Emergency Committee were trying to leave Moscow. News of a military withdrawal from Moscow followed a night of clashes between Soviet tanks and demonstrators defending the Russian parliament. At least three demonstrators were crushed to death or shot when a column of light tanks tried to break through a barricade of buses near the parliament building.
