- Story Text: International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo visited Libya's third largest city of Misrata on Friday (April 20) to assess and gather evidence in relation to claims of systematic rape of Misrati women by pro-Gaddafi forces during the deadly siege of the city which lasted for several months during last year's revolution.
Moreno-Ocampo toured Misrata's Tripoli Street, a main road of the city that leads out towards Tripoli which was the focal point of the heaviest fighting in the city.
"Misrata have a lot of rapes, and we are trying to build a case and respect the culture that girls should not be exposed. What we are trying to do in Misrata is to find evidence showing that the rape was systematic and then we can show the orders and implementation without exposing the face or the names of the victims. That's what we want to achieve, we have to do a case but we have to respect those values in the community," Moreno-Ocampo said.
Moreno-Ocampo is on a four-day visit to the country to help gather evidence of war crimes and assess Libya's legal capabilities ahead of an expected Libyan appeal to the ICC at the end of the month requesting they try Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi on home soil instead of a trial at The Hague where the death sentence would not apply for any conviction. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
