Summary:The hero of the Soviet Union's failed coup, President of the Russian Republic, Boris Yeltsin, went out among jubilant supporters in a Moscow square on August 23 to announce the names of the new Soviet Defence, Interior and KGB ministers. Shortly afterwards Gorbachev himself addressed the Russian parliament. He paid tribute to the outstanding part played by Yeltsin in ending the attempted coup. He said new appointments were to be made. Yeltsin insisted that the Soviet President read out minutes of a meeting which revealed who had backed the attempted coup.
