Summary:At least 57 people were killed in South African township violence on September 8-9, ahead of a peace pact that black and white leaders are due to sign on Saturday September 14. Grenades, gunfire and petrol bombings burst across Soweto, near Johannesburg, where 14 people were killed, including a child in a burned-out home. In Thokoza on September 8 fighting began when three men with assault rifles ambushed mainly Zulu Inkatha Freedom Party supporters heading for a political meeting. On September 9 three blacks died in gunfire aboard a commuter train on the outskirts of Johannesburg and 17 people were injured when they leaped off another moving train in fear of an attack.
