Title:South Africa: Leaders Sign Peace Pact To End Township Warfare
Date:14th September 1991
Summary:Black and white South African leaders on September 14 signed a peace agreement in Johannesburg to end township warfare. Outside, hundreds of Zulu warriors brandished spears and clubs. The supporters of Mangosuthu Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) thronged streets around the venue, a luxury hotel, with full-throated chants, placards boasting of Zulu might, traditional war dances and combat displays with staves and clubs. Buthelezi was among 23 political, labour and church leaders, including President F.W. de Klerk and African National Congress (ANC) president Nelson Mandela, who signed the accord, the first multiracial peace agreement in modern South Africa.
