- Story Text: U.S. forces in Kuwait have shown reporters around a new
logistics camp, completed two years ahead of schedule amid
increasing likelihood of war with Iraq.
The camp, approximately 60 kilometres south of Kuwait
city is being used as a logistics base, receiving equipment
and troops for onward deployment near the Iraqi border in the
north of the country.
Originally scheduled for 2005, events over the past few
months forced earlier completion. The base has been
operational since January.
"My job is primarily just to make sure this equipment's
ready" said Quality Insurance (of equipment) Chief, Joseph
Lee. "And whatever the leadership, Commander in Chief and the
people of the United states decide they want to do, I'm here
to make sure the equipment's ready for them to do that -
whatever action that may be".
With thousands of American soldiers in Kuwait and more on
their way, the country is likely to be a key launching pad for
any U.S. invasion if Baghdad does not satisfy Washington's
demand that it prove itself free of weapons of mass
destruction.
"I would say we've got ships coming in daily, we've got
soldiers coming off planes daily", said Camp Commander,
General Boles. "And the challenge we've got here at this place
to to merge the soldiers that are coming off with the
equipment that's ready for them and make sure we get it off
ships on time to be able to link up with their soldiers."
