- Title: UN-Various Locations: Ousted President Aristide Asks UN For Help-Military Junta Leader Rejects Aristide's Return
- Date: 4th October 1991
- Summary: A delegation of senior Western diplomats from the Organisation of American States flew to Haiti on October 4 to warn the military junta of international isolation and sanctions if ousted President Jean- Bertrand Aristide is prevented from returning to power. In New York, Aristide appealed on October 3 for international help in deposing the military junta which overthrew him. On the same day coup leader General Raoul Cedras said that he would not permit the reinstatement of President Aristide. In Port-au-Prince, rotting corpses were abandoned in the streets because civilians feared being shot if they carried them to mortuaries. Heavy gunfire was heard throughout the capital, and local hospitals said that 'scores of fatalities' were counted.
