  • Story Text: Italian fashion house Missoni, known for its colourful and intricate knitwear designs, opened a hotel in Kuwait on Wednesday (May 24).
    The hotel is the second for the label, which already has a fashion hotel in the Scottish city of Edinburgh.
    Wearing a Missoni cardigan, founding designer Rosita Missoni said that in contrast to the Edinburgh hotel, Kuwait offers more of a resort destination.
    "The second opportunity after having worked on Edinburgh, we thought that it was a good challenge for us to go in a different direction. So here with more city, culture, history. And here, more resort. This place would make us a big ocean, light, sunshine," she said.
    The project, the first for the Italian designer in the Middle East, is also in collaboration with the Rezidor Hotel Group.
    "I certainly know that it is a special hotel. It's totally different than any other hotel. And, I'm sure that it'll be doing well. It's a niche hotel in the sense that it is in the 'lifestyle market'. People are really liking hotels in the lifestyle,'' said hotel CEO Kurt Ritter.

    The Missoni style footprint is visible across the hotel, with zigzags and colourful lines adorning bed linen, furniture and tableware.
    The resort was inaugurated by Kuwait's Minister of Commerce and Industry Amani Bourasli, who joined other dignitaries and high profile business owners at the opening ceremony.
    Among those present was businessman Adwan al-Adwani, owner of Al Tijaria Real Estate.
    ''It was a fantastic opening and we hope that the hotel will be the start of more projects that will serve the country,'' said al-Adwani.
    The hotel has 169 rooms, with many of them being suites, and the owners said they are confident the resort will attract a variety of visitors.
    Rosita Missoni founded the label in 1953 alongside Ottavio Missoni.
    The fashion house signed a deal with the Rezidor Hotel Group in 2005 to establish lifestyle hotels across the world.
    The companies are setting their sites on Oman, Brazil and Turkey, where hotels are expected to open in 2012 and 2013.
