- Story Text: Scuffles broke out at Kuwait airport on Wednesday
evening as foreign residents struggled to get out of Kuwait
ahead of a U.S.- led invasion of Iraq.
SHOWS: For many, Wednesday (March 19) was the last chance to
get out of Kuwait as several airlines, including Thailand's
national carrier, either checked in for their final flights or
laid on special chargers.
Several hundred visibly worried passengers jostled with
each other and tried to push their way to the front in a
desperate bid to secure precious seats on planes out of a city
which has become the front line of the expected U.S. invasion.
Small children sat patiently clutching toys, seemingly
oblivious to the near-panic swirling around them.
It was a brutal contrast with the Kuwait City of old,
whose population had seemed totally unflappable until today.
Two Thai passengers freely admitted that they were scared
and wanted to get out -- others merely stood anxiously waiting
for that once chance to get home.
