Summary:Czechoslovakia's president Vaclav Havel on July 17 announced his resignation after the Slovaks, who rejected him as head of state, proclaimed their sovereignty. Havel's resignation, effective from July 20, made the break-up of the 74-year-old Czechoslovak republic into two separate states appear more certain than ever. It also opened the way for the playwright and former dissident to stand for election as the first head of state of a future Czech republic.
