- Story Text: A spokesman for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi said on Tuesday (May 17) that NATO had struck at two buildings in the capital Tripoli in the early hours.
Journalists staying in Tripoli were taken by their minders to the site of two burning buildings.
Mussa Ibrahim, Gaddafi spokesman said the headquarters of the police force had been hit as well as the ministry for popular inspection and oversight.
He also said that there were many civilians living in this area.
"Other targets were hit tonight, in the early hours of the morning, in the city of Tripoli. The main targets were the head of the police force in Tripoli and the Ministry for Popular Inspection and Oversight (anti corruption)," said Mussa Ibrahim
"As you saw also the targets were located in a very civilian residential area, so people have been terrorised, families terrorised, children terrorised, some of course minor damage to houses around," said Ibrahim.
Britain has led calls to widen NATO's targets.
NATO, which has been hitting targets in Libya for nearly two months, appeared to step up its bombing campaign on Monday with strikes in several towns and cities including Tripoli, according to Libyan state television and rebels.
On the diplomatic front, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said the United Nations was working on the removal of Gaddafi to exile to make way for a new government, and a Libyan government delegation was expected in Moscow on Tuesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
