Summary:French voters on September 20 approved the Maastricht treaty on EC union, but by only a slim margin. Final results showed a bare majority of 51.05 per cent of voters approved European political, economic and monetary union. European Commission president Jacques Delors said the vote was a decisive endorsement of France, Europe and history. France's President Mitterrand, in a televised address to the nation, said he was pleased and he thanked the French people.
