In El Salvador, left-wing guerrillas have intensified their attacks on government troops. A group of guerrillas on April 29 attacked the city of Santa Rosa de Lima in the eastern province of La Union, close to the neighbouring country of Honduras. They destroyed the city's garrison and blew up the bridges around the town in order to keep the regular army from counter-attacking. Despite this, the guerrillas were forced out by the regular army again on April 30. In a guerrilla radio broadcast, the attack was described as the beginning of an offensive named "Victory to El Salvador", which was launched as a direct response to U.S. President Reagan's speech on Central America. President Reagan has asked Congress to increase military and financial aid to El Salvador and other Central American governments to back-up their fight against left-wing movements. As the fighting in El Salvador intensified, the Auxiliary Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor Gregorio Rosa Chavez, said that the death toll in the civil war was rising. According to Monsignor Chavez, at least 246 people were killed in the week from April 24 to May 1, compared to 156 the week before.
