- Story Text: A day after Nigerian peacekeeping troops arrived in
war-torn Liberia, five people have been wounded in a
mortar attack in the capital Monrovia.
A mortar attack wounded five people in the Liberian
capital Monrovia on Tuesday (August 5), a day after
Nigerian peacekeepers started deploying in the war-torn
country.
The wounded were taken to a nearby field hospital run
by Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).
One woman, Esther Doe, said her brother was among those
wounded in the mortar attack.
The West Point district of Monrovia has been the scene
of repeated fighting in the past few weeks, as it is
located on the frontline between forces loyal to President
Charles Taylor and LURD rebels, who are currently on the
other side of the river.
Also on Tuesday, U.S. warships arrived off Liberia to
buttress peacemaking efforts by a West African force trying
to end 14 years of murder and mayhem.
The United States has yet to decide whether to commit
ground troops.
About 200 Nigerian soldiers flew into the airport near
Monrovia on Monday (August 5), triggering celebrations on
both sides of a front line through a city where 2,000 have
died in three rebel attacks since June.
