Summary:More than 400 Palestinians expelled by Israel vowed on December 18 1992 to stay in a fog-shrouded south Lebanon no-man's land between Israeli and Lebanese troops. Dumped on the edge of Israel's security zone and turned back by Lebanese troops at the point of a tank gun, the Palestinians swiftly saw their plight could become a cause to campaign for their return home. The Palestinians were deported following the murder by Hamas members of an Israeli soldier. The Israeli-occupied territories, including Arab East Jerusalem, were paralysed by a general strike in protest at the expulsions. The deportation came after a day of arguments in Israel's Supreme Court which eventually said the government was acting within the law.
