Date:1st January 1914
Summary:It was the German invasion of Belgium that brought Britain into the war beside France and Russia after last minute efforts for peace had failed. A great German 'wheel' through Belgium brought their forces within 50 kilometers of Paris and the British and France had to retreat from their exposed positions. They finally checked the German advance at the Battle of Marne. Fighting with the British and French as a small Belgium army which had taken the first shock of the German onslaught. Hastily mobilised, the Belgium's threw all they had into the struggle, even using the dogs from milk carts to help pull the guns through the mud. NOTE: Date is approximate.
