Summary:A suicide bomber on May 1 rammed his explosives-laden bicycle into Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa and killed him during a May Day rally. Prime Minister Dingiri Banda Wijetunga was appointed acting president. 10 people, including Premadasa's security men, were killed in the blast in Colombo. Police suspected the guerrilla group the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were responsible.
