The bombing of a Druze-owned bank in Beirut on January 11, killed at least three people and wounded fourteen others. Four recent car bombs which have killed fourteen Druze civilians served to emphasise the growing fear of more sectarian fighting. Druze militiamen were out on the streets, ordering motorists to move their parked cars. Those who did not obey had their tyres fired at with automatic weapons. All the casualties in the bombing of the bank in Corniche Mazaraa were civilians. The nine storey building which housed the Bank of Beirut and the Arab Countries, was devastated by a bomb which created a 3 metre (9 foot) hole in the pavement. The daily bombings in Beirut and the rumours of further sectarian strife in the city have brought Moslem militias back onto the streets. Meanwhile after weeks of disagreements and delays, Lebanon's warring factions have allowed 1,700 Lebanese troops to deploy along the strategic coast road linking Beirut to Israeli occupied South Lebanon. The 20-mile long coast road is now under the control of government forces for the first time since Druze and Moslem militiamen took control of West Beirut eleven months ago. The deployment of the Lebanese army on the road, means they can now fill any power vacuum which could result if Israeli forces pull back without negotiated withdrawal. In Jerusalem, the Israeli cabinet on January 13, began debating on the ending of its thirty month occupation of South Lebanon, by a unilateral phased withdrawal.
