- Story Text: A UNITED STATES AIR FORCE B-58 HUSTLER - AMERICA'S FASTEST SUPERSONIC BOMBER - CRASHED AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT TODAY (TUESDAY) DURING THE AIR SHOW KILLING ONE OF THE CREW OF THREE. IT WAS THE SECOND HUSTLER CRASH AT LE BOURGET AIR SHOW; IN 1961 A B-58 PLOUGHED INTO A WHEATFIELD NEAR THE AIRPORT KILLING ALL THREE CREW MEMBERS.
A HELICOPTER LIFTED TWO OF THE INJURED FROM THE BLAZING AIRCRAFT AND BEFORE LEAVING FOR A NEARBY HOSPITAL HOVERED OVERHEAD TO BLOW THE SMOKE AND FLAMES AWAY FROM FIREMEN. THE CRASH OCCURRED AS THE PLANE CAME IN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 25, AND IMMEDIATELY SHEETS OF FLAME ROSE HIGH INTO THE AIR.
EYE-WITNESSES SAID THE IMPACT TORE TWO OF THE ENGINES AWAY FROM THE WINGS AND HURLED THEM YARDS AWAY.
THE B-53 HAD FLOWN SPECIALLY TO PARIS FROM THE UNITED STATES FOR THE SHOW AND HAD MADE ONLY TWO CIRCUITS ABOVE THE WAITING CROWDS BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. IT WAS TO HAVE JOINED ANOTHER HUSTLER ALREADY ON STATIC DISPLAY AT THE SHOW.
