Summary:Denmark put European unity back on track by voting in a referendum on May 18 to accept the Maastricht treaty. After the official 56.8 to 43.2 per cent result was announced, a jubilant Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said the vote was 'of historical importance'. Violence then erupted as 200-300 squatters set fire to barricades, broke into banks and threw bricks at riot police in a working class district close to the centre of Copenhagen.
