Summary:August 4 1914 Europe was at war. A rash of declarations of war had engulfed the Balkans and Russia in the previous few days but now, almost inevitably, Germany, Britain and France were mobilised and ready to fight. In London, thousands of men flocked to the recruiting stations. The army of the day was a volunteer army and there was no lack of volunteers. Within a few days there was a new army of 100,000 men waiting to be trained and sent to battle.
